I agree with Mr. Jacob Beauchamp’s well-thought out and well-written Jan. 19 letter. His observation about our TV culture is spot on, as well as what passes for political discussion. I would add that this coarseness, rudeness and generally rotten TV even extend into cartoon channels and so-called “History” channels as well.
It seems the only things offered up on TV are the lowest elements in human behavior, contrived if necessary. Modern cartoons go this route, although they don’t have to “bleep” the cartoon characters yet, that can’t be far away. They are nothing more than “how to be a mean brat” demonstration and tutorial. This may help to explain all the meanness we have encountered at school beginning at the grade school level and can be found in every mass confinement school across America.
Dr. Ron Paul recently mentioned in a forum discussing his right to life position that our laws reflect society, more so than the opposite, that laws can change society. He pointed that it was the aftermath of the decadent 1960s generation that led to the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and the ultimate constitutional amendment legalizing abortion. He went on to state “we must focus on changing the hearts and minds of Americans, because it is much harder to legislate morality.” A good start may be with the TV off and homeschooling.
