First, there was the Dothan police officer, Brent Parrish, arrested for DUI, leaving the scene of an accident he caused and was allowed to retire. The Eagle confirmed the D.A.’s office was still allowing him to testify in court. How could any judge justify allowing him to take the stand? How could jurors find his testimony credible?
Now the D.A. and Circuit Clerk inform us if criminals would pay 10 percent of their court fines the county would operate in the black, not the red. What?! Many “convicts” pay 100 percent of their fines. Does Dothan rely on criminal convictions when planning their budget? Didn’t Dothan rely on Country Crossing developer Ronnie Gilley, an admitted liar, briber and felon, to solve the unemployment/financial dilemma?
I want to speak for the non-violent “criminals” w/the disease of addiction. Any educated person knows addiction is a disease like cancer. It’s a disorder. Check the DSM-IV. I’m not speaking for the therapist from the Child Advocacy Center arrested for molesting a minor (Mr. Valeska founded the CAC and serves on the board), robbers, rapists and drug traffickers.
Dothan has no drug court. Just fine people and keep fining. Pray they don’t get rehabilitated because Dothan needs money. Individuals apprehended have their names and addresses published in the paper, prior to trial, resulting in a loss of employment. Bail of $15,000 per charge can be assessed. Their driver’s license is suspended, so no transportation. A fine of $6,000/offense for possession can be levied. Lawyer, probation and SPECTRACARE fees. (Being “monitored” by SPECTRACARE is just a drug screen. No counseling). Should recovering addicts not pay for rent, groceries, insurance, etc., for their family first?
The D.A.’s office blames “criminals” for the financial crisis in Dothan? The EPA/wastewater fiasco costs the city thousands, daily.
Dothan’s government and judicial systems are a joke throughout the state.
