A group calling itself “Progressives of the Wiregrass” recently held rallies in the area to solicit support for “getting the money out of politics.” They are opposed to current law that allows corporations to spend money buying political advertising.
I am in sympathy with their cause and will offer my full support but only after they include all corporations, such as those corporations that own and control the liberal-leaning and biased news media.
Until the advent of Fox News, owned by News Corporation, there was no news alternative and for decades the American people were fed a constant stream of liberal/progressive propaganda by the major news corporations. Other corporations purchasing 30-second ads during election season sinks to insignificance when compared to the power to influence public opinion these major corporations have possessed for decades.
Who are these corporations? General Electric, whose CEO Jeffrey Immelt is a frequent adviser of President Obama, owns NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and even Telemundo. The Walt Disney Corporation owns ABC. Time Warner owns CNN, and CBS owns, of course, CBS.
What’s even more frightening is that these corporations also control thousands of radio and TV stations, newspapers, the content of movies out of Hollywood, the continuous onslaught of left-leaning programming throughout the day on their non-news stations, and even cartoons that can be used to propagandize children.
So I ask the Progressives of the Wiregrass in the name of fairness : Which corporations actually have the greater opportunity to propagandize the American public -- those news networks and entertainment outlets that promote the leftist agenda 24/7/365 or, other corporations that purchase political ads during election season?
This seems a thinly veiled attempt to silence the conservative viewpoint. If this group wants credibility for their effort, they must apply the same standards to major news corporations they seek to apply to non-news corporations.
