Nick Saban disclosed on National Signing Day that Julio Jones had offseason surgery. The wide receiver wasn’t alone.
Ten other players had minor surgeries to clean up nagging injuries. Most of the players will be ready for spring drills, which are tentatively scheduled to start March 23.
Two players will be held out of contact this spring, which culminates April 18 with the A-Day Game at 2 p.m. Receiver Earl Anthony had surgery on his right shoulder and will be held out of contact. Roy Upchurch had neck surgery and also won’t have contact this spring.
Jones had surgery on his left shoulder and left wrist. He is expected back at full strength for spring drills.
Other Alabama players who had surgery and are expected to be ready for spring include: cornerback Kareem Jackson, left wrist; offensive lineman Barrett Jones, right shoulder; linebacker Rolando McClain, right thumb; tight end Colin Peek, left foot; linebacker Cory Reamer, right knee and right wrist; receiver B.J. Scott, right knee; tight end Brad Smelley, right wrist; and defensive lineman Lorenzo Washington, right thumb.
The Tide’s tentative 15-practice spring schedule includes practices on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from March 23 to April 18, excluding Friday, April 17.
Tide sets coaching clinic: Alabama’s 2009 Coaching Clinic will feature Nebraska’s legendary Tom Osborne, former Alabama great Ozzie Newsome and several top young coaches.
Derek Dooley (Louisiana Tech), Jason Garrett (Dallas Cowboys) and Stan Hixon (Washington Redskins) are also scheduled to speak in Tuscaloosa in March.
“The annual coaching clinic is one of our favorite events of the year. We are looking forward to hearing from some outstanding coaches and spending some time sharing knowledge and exchanging ideas to enhance professional development at all levels,” Saban said in a statement released by the university. “We have a great lineup of speakers again this year which will include several of the region’s championship-winning high school coaches.”
The three-day clinic begins on the evening of Thursday, March 26, and includes a full day of guest speakers on Friday before wrapping up on March 28, after the Crimson Tide holds one of the 15 spring practices.
Coaches interested in attending may access the registration form online at www.rolltide.com or www.coachsaban.net. The clinic fee is $50.00, but those who register in advance will receive the “on the ball” discounted fee of $40. In addition to the full schedule of speakers, meals are included in the cost.
