Neither Bo Derek nor Dudley Moore will be in attendance, but Dothan Post 12 will go for a perfect 10 this weekend.
Dothan will try to win its 10th consecutive district tournament this weekend, beginning with a 4 p.m. game against Prattville Post 122 today. The winner faces Enterprise Post 73 at 7 p.m.
The three-team tournament continues Saturday, and will be played Sunday only if the extra championship game is necessary.
“It’s going to be an average field,” Post 12 manager Larry Tubbs said. “Not anybody is a killer team. We’ve got a pretty good club, but we’re suspect in some
ways.”
Dothan and Enterprise have faced each other three times this summer, and Dothan has won all three games.
However, Post 12 has not faced Prattville this season.
“I know nothing about them,” Tubbs said. “I know that they’ve always been competitive in the past. They didn’t have a team the last couple of years.”
For Dothan’s players, seeing a different team to start the tournament is a welcome sight.
“We’re ready to see a different team,” said Neil Hudson, a player from Excel who has signed with Alabama Southern. “If we get good innings out of our starting
pitching, we should be just fine.”
Hudson leads the team with 47 RBIs.
He is also second on the team with a .473 batting average, and he has hit 15 doubles.
Hudson stays in Dothan with a teammate, avoiding the long drive back and forth to Excel. He was recruited by teammate Cale Nolen of Red Level.
One player with a significantly shorter drive said mental preparation is key.
“We have to go out and prepare like they’re a 48-4 team,” said Parrish Smith, a pitcher and outfielder from Northview. Smith is 4-1 with a 2.68 ERA and has
signed with Central Alabama.
Smith is not expected to pitch today, but he said he will approach the game as if he were going to pitch.
“You have to be ready every game, because you could pitch at any moment,” Smith said.
Dothan’s leading hitter is former Houston Academy star Brennan Olive. He has pressed out 64 hits and a team-leading .478 average.
Post 12 will start Nolen against Prattville. He is 4-2 with a 1.40 ERA. If Dothan wins, Karsten Whitson will pitch against Enterprise.
Whitson is 4-0 with a 1.91 ERA. He has pitched 22 innings and thrown 30 strikeouts.
