TROY — Troy quarterback Levi Brown has gotten plenty of attention this year with his arm, but his best highlight in Troy’s 40-20 win over Western Kentucky came with his feet.
Late in the fourth quarter, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Brown ran 39 yards on a zone read when he saw that the defense was attacking the running back.
Some people thought he would go 90 yards for a touchdown.
“He got in the open and somebody said on the headphones that he’s going to score,” offensive coordinator Neal Brown said. “I don’t know what kid you’re watching, but he’s not going to score. He moves pretty well for his size, but the way he runs, he looks slower than he is.”
Levi Brown was getting plenty of ribbing from his teammates Monday after the run.
“We were wondering what was taking so long,” linebacker Bear Woods said. “We didn’t hear a whistle or nothing so we thought it was a timeout, but it was Levi running down the sideline. I really thought it was (tight end) Travis (Boyd) when we saw him running, because I thought it was a tight end.”
Quipped Levi Brown, “I was running at least a 4.25 (seconds in a 40-yard dash time), at least.”
But Levi Brown saw WKU defensive back Jamal Forrest, a freshman listed at 5-foot-8 and 162 pounds, at the end of his run and went out of bounds.
“Had I been in that part of the game, I would have hit him out of bounds and hurt him,” Woods said. “Even if he tried to go out of bounds, I still would have hit him.”
Neal Brown said there was “no chance” Troy would try a receiver throwback pass to Levi Brown, but the Trojans will definitely need his arm in Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. game at Arkansas.
Troy’s seven-game win streak will be put to the test against the best opponent, other than Florida, that the Trojans will see this year.
Levi Brown has thrown 258 straight passes without an interception, dating back to the opening series in Troy’s third game of the season against UAB. He threw two in the season opener at Bowling Green and one at Florida after throwing three in eight starts last year.
With 14 more passes without an interception, Brown will break former Fresno State and NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer’s string of 271 during a season. Current North Carolina State quarterback Russell Wilson holds the all-time record, going 378 straight passes over two seasons without an interception.
“It would be a cool record to have, most attempts ever without a pick,” Levi Brown said. “If I think about it, I’ll probably throw one, so I just won’t think about it and go out there and play like I always do.”
Levi Brown said his increased knowledge of the game since high school has helped him become a more accurate passer. He has hit 65 percent of his passes for 2,777 yards and 15 touchdowns.
“When I was in high school, I didn’t really know how to read coverages at all, so that’s probably the main reason I’m doing as well in that aspect,” Levi Brown said.
