Troy offensive coordinator Neal Brown is interviewing with Texas Tech for the same position, Trojans head coach Larry Blakeney said Monday.
But as of 8:30 p.m. Monday, Brown said he still had not talked to Tuberville.
Brown just completed his fourth year on Troy’s staff and second year as offensive coordinator. Former Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville was introduced as the Red Raiders’ new head coach Sunday and sought out Brown at the American Football Coaches Association coaches’ convention, Blakeney said.
“Neal called and told me he had been contacted by a representative of Texas Tech and they wanted to talk to him,” Blakeney said. “That’s all I know at this point. There’s certainly issues Neal will have to sort through. Other than that, I’m sorta helpless.”
Issues Brown would have to sort through include working for the head coach that fired one of his coaching mentors, Tony Franklin, in 2008. Franklin, Troy’s offensive coordinator from 2006-07, was hired by Tuberville at Auburn after the 2007 season and fired midway through the 2008 season.
Brown came to Troy with Franklin, who is now the offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee, and the two still talk regularly. Brown played for Franklin while Franklin was an assistant coach at Kentucky.
“It’s two different men, two different situations and a different set of circumstances,” Blakeney said. “Neal is a mature young man way beyond his years. I think he’ll consider everything they have to say. There’s nothing I can do about it.”
Brown, the youngest coordinator at the Football Bowl Subdivision level at 29 years old, led the Trojans to a No. 3 national ranking in yards per game at 485.7
Pratt to transfer: Blakeney confirmed the transfer of freshman running back Greg Pratt, a Naples, Fla., native who redshirted last season. He was rated as a three-star recruit on rivals.com, but he redshirted to add bulk to his 5-foot-8, 165-pound frame.
Blakeney wasn’t sure where Pratt would transfer, but he said the running back left on good terms and was given a release to transfer anywhere except a Sun Belt Conference team.
Eight new Trojans enroll: The start of the spring semester means the welcoming of new players to Troy’s football team.
Four players from the junior college ranks who recently signed — quarterback Greg Jenkins, wide receiver Brett Moncrief, offensive lineman Jarred Fleming and cornerback Jimmie Anderson — have enrolled, and running back Chris Anderson, who was at Troy in 2008 and played last fall at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, got his grades up and is back at Troy.
The Trojans also welcomed three grayshirts to campus. Wide receivers Jamel Johnson and Sam Haskins and defensive back Bradley Wallace signed with Troy last year but delayed full-time enrollment until this spring. They will still have five years to play four.
