OZARK — The run at the state tournament is over for the Enterprise State Boll Weevils. The powerful Shelton State pitching staff shut the Boll Weevils down Monday morning in their third game of the ACCC State Baseball Tournament at Eagle Stadium.
Enterprise managed only three hits in the contest, and that simply wasn’t enough. Shelton blanked the Boll Weevils 10-0 and ended the game in seven innings because of the 10-run rule.
“We just couldn’t get our bats going this morning,” Enterprise coach Tim Hulsey said. “Yea, we may have run out of gas. We had to play in that play-in game against Southern Union, and then we played three consecutive days here at the state tournament. But I am proud of the guys. They fought hard just to get
here.”
Shelton jumped on the Boll Weevils early. The first three batters of the game reached base and all three scored. Brandon Roberts got it started with a double and J.R. Krebs singled. Kenny Fleming plated the first run with his single to left field. The final two runs scored on sacrifice flies by Corben Green and Dustin
Dunn.
The Pioneers really opened up the game in the bottom of the third inning. Shelton scored five runs on only three hits. But Boll Weevil pitchers walked two, hit two others, and the defense committed an error that lead to run. Two of the RBIs came from a single by Green and the other two from a single by Dunn.
Shelton added its ninth run in the fourth inning. Cayleb Coker was credited with the RBI.
The best chance the Boll Weevils had to get back in the game came in the fifth inning. J. Ryan Rennspies was hit by a pitch, while Jefferson and Currie both
walked to load the bases with just one out. But Randolph and Kles both struck out to end the threat.
The Pioneers ended the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Brad Griffis struck out two batters. But Krebs managed to bloop a single into left field to score the game ending run.
“This is a very competitive league,” Hulsey said. “We just lost to the defending state champion in the loser’s bracket. Right now, anybody can win this tournament.
“I am very proud of our team. We have a lot to look forward to in the coming years. Most of team are freshmen and they will be coming back. We enjoy great support from out president and the dean of students. Good things are happening at Enterprise State. We have a lot to build on. It’s a good time to be a Boll
Weevil.”
Faulkner State 12, Northwest Shoals 5: Faulkner State eliminated Shoals as Andrew Prichard went 3-for-5 with five RBIs. Stephen Clarke went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Douglas Turo had two hits and three RBIs. Alex Lange got the win.
Kody Ortman and Beau Buckler had three hits each for Shoals.
In the nightcap, Marion Military beat Central Alabama 9-5.
