After Central of Phenix City scored its final touchdown during its 48-0 win on Friday night at Rip Hewes Stadium, Northview coach Wayne White called his troops together on the sidelines and told them to take a knee.

With still 6:34 left in the third quarter, White figured a stern talking to was in order.

“I challenged them at halftime to fight,” White said. “And I didn’t see that going on.
“I asked them if we needed to call it off.”

Northview somewhat answered the challenge, holding the Red Devils scoreless the rest of the game.

“We’re capable of winning,” White said before leaving the field. “We’re capable of scoring points.”

But it was Central of Phenix City having its way most of the game while scoring on seven consecutive possessions after being forced to punt on its opening drive.

Central quarterback Jonathan Wallace had a big night, running for three touchdowns and throwing for another on 9-of-16 passing for 139 yards, with several of the incompletions being dropped passes that should have been caught.

Jerald Walker had a strong game running for the Red Devils, rushing for 173 yards on just eight carries.

Central improved to 4-0 in the area, 6-0 overall, while Northview dropped to 0-3 in area play, 1-5 overall.

The Red Devils’ defense seemingly stayed in the face of Northview quarterback Jalen Harris all night long, dropping him for several crushing losses and generally causing havoc in the Cougar backfield.

Harris was thrown for 53 yards in losses, and was 6-of-15 passing for 26 yards.

The Cougars’ leading rusher was Jaris Barner with 38 yards on eight carries.

Central made it 6-0 when Wallace scored on a 7-yard run late in the first quarter. The extra point kick was missed.

The second touchdown was set up by a 34-yard pass from Wallace to J.D. McKissic down to the Northview 20. Two plays later, Trent Miles scored around a big hole on the right side on an 11-yard run. Brandon Dorrill kicked through the extra point.

Central made it 20-0 midway through the second quarter when Wallace scored on a 4-yard keeper. It came two plays after Walker ripped loose for a 55-yard run.

After a Northview fumble on the ensuing possession was recovered by Central’s Martez Reed at the Cougars’ 46, the Red Devils put more points on the scoreboard with a 16-yard TD run by Wallace, making it 27-0.

Central scored once more before halftime when Wallace threw a 13-yard pass to McKissic, who made a wonderful diving catch in the back of the end zone. Dorrill’s kick made it 34-0 at the break.

On its first possession of the second half, Central got runs of 22 and 23 yards from McKissic to set up a 4-yard TD run by Miles.

Central’s final score came when Walker broke loose up the middle for a 42-yard run, breaking several tackles along the way. Dorrill’s extra point kick accounted for the 48-0 final.
