Roundup: Abbeville Christian Academy girls win region title

ASHFORD – Abbeville Christian Academy defeated Ashford Academy 53-40 to win the AISA Class A, Region 1, championship on Saturday in girls basketball action.

ACA had a balanced scoring attack led by tourney MVP Halyee Kirkland with 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while Nicole Benefield scored 12, Lindsey Giles 10 and Kiley Ethridge nine.

Ashford Academy got a big effort from Jenna Epperson, who scored 18 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.

It marked the first region title for the ACA girls since 2001.

The Generals improved to 19-12 and will play next in the Elite Eight at Huntingdon College.

Boys

Crenshaw Christian 52, Ashford Academy 36: Peter Milivojevich scored 24 points and tournament MVP Austin Brown chipped in 15 as Crenshaw won the AISA Class A, Region 1 boys championship.

Ashford Academy was led by Alex Morris with 25 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and four steals, while Hunter Hawkins scored six points.

Ashford Academy will be the No. 2 seed in the Elite Eight at Huntingdon College on Wednesday and will play at 7:30 p.m.

Abbeville Christian 66, South Montgomery 41: Austin Reeder and Chip White each scored 13 to lead the Generals to a third place finish in the region tournament. White also had 12 rebounds and blocked seven shots.

Kyle Helms scored 11 for ACA, and Dakota Hudson added 10 points and had seven assists.

The Generals advance to the Elite Eight at Huntingdon College on Wednesday.

South Montgomery was led by Colt Hicks with 14 points.

 Regular Season

Boys
Headland 80, Northview 68:
Dishon McKay scored 33, grabbed 10 rebounds, had five steals and five assists in leading the Rams (21-7). Dexter Marsh contributed 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Northview was led by Marquez White with 30 points and Eric Holmes with 14.

Andalusia 72, Opp 43: Jacard Townsend led Andalusia (16-13) with 32 points and 11 rebounds. Lakelyus Adams had 13 points.
Tyler Ferguson led Opp (7-15) with 11 points.


Girls

Northview 59, Headland 36: Dyshenique Critten scored 20 and Jasman Hamilton 15 for the Cougars. Whitney Watford has seven assists. Headland was led by Desirae Taylor with 16 points.

Andalusia 72, Opp 55: Alexis Horton led the Lady Bulldogs (24-2) with 30 points, eight assists and four steals. Alectricia Barnes had 10 points and nine assists and Shi'Amber Townsend had nine points and six rebounds.
For Opp (13-6), Lane Saquaya had 12 points, Laiken Free 11 and Nisha Stoudemire 10 points.

JV Boys

Headland 67, Northview 58: Brannon Nix scored 22 and Jimmy Spann 21 to lead Headland.
Northview was led by Tylan Ratliff with 10 points.
