AUBURN -- Just three weeks after completing his staff, Auburn head coach Gene Chizik is now looking for another assistant coach.
Cornerbacks coach Phillip Lolley will step away from his on-the-field responsibilities, Auburn announced Tuesday afternoon, leaving the Tigers with an immediate opening.
Lolley, who coached cornerbacks the last three years for the Tigers and has been with the program as both an administrator and coach since 1999, will return to an administrative capacity within the football program, according to Chizik.
“We appreciate Coach Lolley and the contributions he has made to the Auburn football program in his various roles over the years,” Chizik said. “We look forward to him continuing to help with the program’s success in his new capacity.”
This is the third staff change for Chizik since Auburn ended its regular season in November.
First defensive coordinator Ted Roof left for the same position at UCF. Roof has since been hired as the defensive coordinator at Penn State under new head coach Bill O'Brien.
Then offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn took the head coaching job at Arkansas State.
Chizik filled both coordinator openings after Auburn beat Virginia in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, tabbing Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder to run the defense and Temple OC Scot Loeffler to run the offense.
Lolley was a conditioning coach from 1999-2000, before serving as the secondary coach from 2000-03 under former head coach Tommy Tuberville.
From 2004-08, Lolley was the Director of NFL Relations prior to returning to the field as a coach in 2009 when Chizik was hired.
Lolley, 57, received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Livingston in 1977 and 1981, respectively. He was a high school coach in the state of Alabama from 1977-98.
