The Mobile Press-Register is reporting that Dothan coach Dedrick Sumpter has been hired as head football coach at Williamson in Mobile, but Sumpter told the Dothan Eagle Friday afternoon that he has not been approved.
“I was told I was a top two candidate, but I have not been board approved,” Sumpter said. “I am still at Dothan and I am still the head basketball coach at Dothan.”
Sumpter, who has been Dothan’s head basketball coach and an assistant football coach for the past two seasons, said he interviewed at Williamson two weeks ago and that he was told this past Wednesday by Williamson principal Robert Likely of being a finalist.
“He told me that I was in the top two and that he would get back with me,” Sumpter said of his last correspondence with the school.
However, Likely confirmed the hire in an e-mail to the Press-Register on Friday, according to the Press-Register’s website at al.com.
“Sumpter is very energetic, passionate, self motivated, organized and realistic about the current statics of WHS,” Likely wrote. “However, what is most important he believes in academics first. He has committed himself to building athlete relationships, motivation and performance both on and off the field.”
Dothan athletic director Kelvis White said Friday that Sumpter has not tendered a resignation to him.
Sumpter has been a head football coach before, having served as interim head coach at Bullock County on two occasions.
Sumpter has been at Dothan the last two seasons in his roles as head basketball coach and assistant football coach. He guided the Tiger basketball team to a 14-9 record in his first year last season. Dothan was 9-11 going into its game Friday against Carroll.
He came to Dothan after five years at Bullock where he served in various roles, including assistant football coach and interim head coach twice. He was more known, though, for his role as head basketball coach there, guiding the Hornets to 100 wins and the 2007-08 state title.
Prior to going to Bullock County, Sumpter was head basketball coach and assistant football coach at Holtville for two years. He began his career at Central of Hayneville, coaching only football as a co-offensive coordinator for one season.
Williamson seeks to replace Bobby Parrish, who resigned after going 96-57 as the Lions’ head coach from 1999-2011, including 4-6 last season.
